CS Guide teacher's notes:
These should include failover

systems, redundancy, removable

media, offsite/online storage.

  • RAID (redundant back up system that works by saving data on multiple hard drive disks)
  • Master/slave back up system (similar to RAID but it distributes data over multiple servers)
  • Sharding (takes a file and breaks it into smaller fragment and spreads it across the back up system, very secure when used with master/slave)
  • Failover systems (mechanism for switching over from broken server to an active one)
  • Security (physical security/access to server rooms-software security/encryption, checksums, certificate, monitoring)
  • Environment/Location
  • ACID (protocol for reliable storage: Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability)
  • Training (properly using software, types of backups, using cloud technology, troubleshooting)

Terms:
Checksums = indicator of message integrity
Redundancy = the duplication of information at several points, to reduce the loss of information given any one point fails
